Birthdays and broccoli

Sitting quietly in the early morning gloom, the only sound is the click of the keyboard and the back ground drivel of the radio. Upstairs Eldest sleeps off the last of his lurgy, Youngest and Himself have decamped to school and work. I am so very tired, still weary from my viral-what-ever.

Last night we celebrated a girlfriend's birthday here and it was lovely to see all the gang. We have been together for nigh on 20 years and every couple of months or so we meet up bearing news, food and increasing amounts of wrinkles. Last night's affair was lovely and relaxed, we can just pick up conversations and carry them on as if we'd never been apart.

Happy birthday Christine!!

Now to finish tidying up the detritus from last night.............!

On the Revolutions front, I have finally started this year's 52 New Things Not Cooked Before -

Broccoli cheese pie with grated potato crust

A simple enough recipe, shame about the cook (but that's another story) and when I served it at last night's birthday bash - it seemed to go down well. I will make it again with modifications and post the recipe.

Sorry there is no 'after' photo......it got eaten.....completely

A good sign me thinks.

Vive la Revolution and other such things.........

Today is yet another dreich day. But I am not letting that dampen (sic) my spirits! I thought I would just quickly post a bit more about those beautiful jewel coloured wools I received. I had intended in finishing the crochet part of my latest project whilst out on the 'Raid Tan Hill' but I was kinda busy so my crochet is still a WIP.

But every time I look at those colours they gladden my heart and cheer up my day!

How can these wools not make me smile?

What am I making? Well .. it's a - no wait - will tell you later, sorry :) I was inspired by a picture I saw once and thought - I can do that!

And what's more it involves crochet and felting and sewing. How's that for getting on with the Revolution!

************************

Another of my Revolution edicts was to draw more - I've not sketched for a long time and feel very very rusty so please excuse the wobblyness of it all -

Right - enough chat, got things to do, places to be, sick children to tend to (yup the next one is down with some sort of bug) our house feel like a cottage hospital at the moment with one or the other of us down with some lurgy. Never mind - these are all things that make the rich tapestry of life (yeah right!!)

Hi...ho...hi...ho...a 'raiding' we will go

This morning dawned bright and early - well, ummm, not so much of the bright but definitely the early. We were heading for a dawn raid and we had to get up before it was light. We wrapped up warmly and loaded the car with a picnic basket burgeoning with yummy delights. I looked at my three and despite the early start and the grey wet weather - we were all grinning with anticipation.

We travelled for about 20 minutes before we saw the sun come up, the clouds had broken and it was still bitterly cold, but in the car we were all cosy and warm under our crochet blankets.

Where were we going? Well, I put a link in yesterday's post as a hint but I can reveal today that we were participating in a 'Raid', but not just any old raid, we were about to do our first 'Raid Tan Hill'. But before I say anything more, I think a little flash back is needed..................

July last year we entered our 2CV, Emily,  in the village garden festival - as a planter - like you do when you are a known eccentric - any hoo I digress, our 2CV won 2 awards and I was suitably surprised and delighted. As a reward, we took our little car off to be restored by a specialist garage.

Much puffing of cheeks and tutting and rubbing of oily forehead by the mechanic produced a bleak (and therefore a very expensive) scenario. Emily apparently was worse than useless and not worth repairing...........the mechanic 'very kindly' offered to take her off our hands and use her as part-ex for a newer and therefore expensive (but not as expensive as the restoration) replacement. He went on how he would try and salvage any bits and use her for other restoration projects.

He was talking about using Emily for body parts!!!!!!!!!!!

Himself was devastated. We had rescued this little car once before and it had been our (but mainly his) dream to get her road worthy again.  We left Emily with the garage and drove home with our new 2CV. Our journey home was in stony silence, we should have been delighted with a newer model with no rust, no corrosion, not needing restoration and road ready.

We felt terrible - we had let Emily down, we had abandoned her!

Late that night Himself instructed me that as soon as the garage was open I was to ring them and tell them not to do anything to Emily - we were coming back for her!  Which we did, much to the garage owner and mechanic's bemusement. They had even offered more money for her.

We brought her home. Now, we were a 2 x 2CV family, did that mean were were a 4CV family?

So, to cut a fairly long story short, Emily is going to be restored - by Himself, piece by piece, with help from his junior mechanics (us) and even better, we have bonded with our new little car and she is called .... Gertie.

So, back to the present, c'mon.....keep up, keep up!

We took Gertie to Britain's highest Inn - Tan Hill which is 1732 feet above sea level - in the middle winter, through snow and ice. We were not alone, we trundled along with 51 other intrepid 2CVs of all colours and shapes.

Our new little girl - Gertie is a 'plum and custard'. 2CV colours are given whimsical names and unusual colour combinations. Emily is a 'Blueberry and Cream'

We ambled through quaint Dales villages

We roared our way over the cols on narrow icy tracks

Youngest took charge of the camera as often as he could

Half way there we were re-routed due to ice on the usual road. A bit later we all stopped and were supplied with hot mulled wine.We raided our picnic hamper
 - as usual the boys were starving

When it was time to set off again, several vehicles had to be 'helped'
from their parking spaces back on to the road

The higher we climbed, the less clear the roads and the more intrepid we felt!

We tobogganed over hill.....

...and slid down dale

Then suddenly we all ground to a halt, the lead cars were slipping and sliding just a bit too much. Marshals jumped out of their cars and began pushing and guiding the little cars through the drifts.

Whilst we waited for our turn to attempt the hill I took more photos

Yes - this is the road we took!
Himself managed to get up with out any assistance despite the icy conditions,
but it was an interesting ascent, a bit more 'dancing on ice' that driving with due care.......

Our destination - Tan Hill Pub - 1732 feet above sea level.
Warm food and cold beer were waiting and we were ready.

Some of the earlier arrivals had been plastered with snow

A final photograph before we headed home.

Getting back was 'interesting' to say the least as the roads we had managed to do during the day were rapidly icing over as the sun dropped and we had to go the long way round.... a very long way round.... to get home. The boys needless to say finished off the contents of the picnic hamper and promptly fell asleep curled up under their blankets.

As I write this, I can see our certificate we received for participating in the 2011 Raid Tan Hill and know that despite driving, sliding and tobogganing over 120 miles we have thoroughly enjoyed today.

Oh yes - I did get some crochet done, not a lot though - there was too much other entertainment going on :)

Ooh am getting excited!!

We are off out for the day tomorrow on a jolly jaunt  with a special friend of ours (Gertie) - and as I was getting things ready I thought how colourful my table was looking - messy but colourful. After the last few dreich days this was just what I needed.

Some beautiful merino hanks I was unexpectedly gifted which are now transforming into my next project - I know I said I would wait until the light was better to take pictures but it hasn't improved any so I just turned on the camera's flash instead......

Granny squares and oblong shapes - little splashes of colour making my heart sing.

Aah, time to stop playing and finish getting ready for tomorrow - I am so-oo excited and I know I am not the only one! I am taking my camera (and crochet of course) and will share our day with you soon!  And so not to keep you on tenterhooks here is a little clue.

Lovely chatting to you all xxxxx

WIP? Nope FO'ed!

Happy? Too right :)

Talk about chuffed to bits with my first finished object of 2011. I took the almost finished claopotis scarf to knit and natter last night and whilst chatting I finished the edging and wove in the threads - and I am delighted with it!

So, shall we get down to the all important details? Ready? right here goes:..............

Yarn - No idea, it had been gifted to me by this lovely lady.
It is a lovely coffee coloured yarn with flecks of rich russety orange and a twist of cream and pale yellow. I did a WPI and it indicates that it is a medium 5ply or 'sport weight'.

Measurement :    170cm x 35cm

Starting chain : 4

Number of stitches at widest part: 64

Rows: 140

Amount of yarn used : just under 250gm

Cost: Freeeeeeeeeee! My sort of bargain :)

Photo: Clapotis stretched out on the carpet

Scarf: Now around my neck and shoulders keeping me scrummily warm and happy

And Me? : well I may have mentioned - chuffed to bits!

**********************

Oh, and I've started another project - but you will have to wait until the light is better before I take photographs, a dull snowy grey day doesn't help to take happy pictures!

Would you like ice with that?

By Saturday, despite still feeling quite pathetic, I needed to get out, and my boys needed no further encouragement. So a hasty picnic was thrown together and we piled into the car as Himself had spotted some geo-caches he wanted to do over in the Dales.

It was the hardest walk I have done in a very long time - well it was for me....... I could hear my blood roaring in my ears, my heart was pounding and every breath I took was ragged and hoarse, but it was wonderful to be out and as Himself kept cheerfully telling me
....it will be doing you some good to get some fresh air......
it was at this point my head felt like it was going to fall off and I was gasping for breath like a fish out of water. I could barely reply never mind thump him. It was a good thing he was out of range so I just gave him a good glaring at (through rheumy eyes of course!) But he was right, it was nice to be out.

We walked along the River Wenning and were staggered at the size of the ice floes that littered the river bank. They were above the water level and we could only surmise that the river had been very much higher when it froze then as the river returned to it's lower level the slabs of ice became lodged on the sides and stacked up like frozen dominoes. I've not seen anything like this before. Youngest became all intrepid and climbed up onto them whilst Eldest took photos for me.

Sitting back in the car waiting for my heart rate to calm down and my breathing to settle, I thought that despite  struggling with this little potter I enjoyed it. I then promptly fell asleep in the car all the way home!

******************

For as long as I have known Himself, he has set a challenge to scoff as many sweet mince pies as he can during the month of December. Over the years I have aided and abetted him with either baking or buying the vast quantities he consumes.  He as been the champion for years, until now............. his little protégées are catching up fast. I recorded their attempts last year here. Youngest was bitterly disappointed with his latest efforts but seeing he was down with the flu I think he did admirably well.

So, with out further ado - the final tally is as follows................
Himself - 118 (12 more than last year)
Eldest -  76 (he managed 45 last time)
Youngest - 75 ( down from 91)
Me - 19 (up from 16 !)

I keep these tally sheets and have done for years and when the decorations come down at the end of the festive season, they are added to the box. I used to be the one who made the chart, now the boys have taken that over. They carefully choose the pictures to suit each of us and then they log each and every mince pie that is eaten.

If only they were that diligent with their homework!!

Hello 2011!!

Back.
Been rather ill - in fact very ill.
Got dem festive time flu's - in a big way - but hey! I'm back - albeit I lost some days (bad) and some weight (good) and I am still as limp as a two week old shop bought lettuce.

Thank you for all your 'get better' messages, I may not have responded at the time, but believe me I was very touched - thank you.

Any hoo - to get the blog ball rolling I thought I write myself my New Year's Revolutions list (yes you read right - REVOLUTIONS!!)

  1. Crochet more - try to complete at least one item every two weeks
  2. Sew much more - attempt braver projects and keep on improving my hand sewing
  3. Blog about #1 and  #2  on a regular basis
  4. Attempt more 'How-To' posts
  5. Continue or rather restart my 52 New Things Not Cooked Before - I know I didn't reach the full 52 last year so would like 2011 be the year to try again - Colouritgreen is also up for it - are you? C'mon join us - it isn't as hard as it sounds
  6. Continue revamping the house - the bathroom was a good start
  7. Sow more seeds, take more cuttings, plant more flowers
  8. Pick more fresh flowers from the garden for the house
  9. Grow more of our own vegetables - have had variable success over the last few years - partly down to the weather and partly down to me
  10. Walk more, ride more
  11. Go to Copenhagen with the bicycles
  12. Complete my work-based coursework
  13. Start a new course - a craft one - for me
  14. Learn an instrument - I started one a couple of years ago and was made to feel rather inadequate by the music teacher - I turned tail and ran. But now I have been given contact details of some one who sounds a lot more understanding - they need to be - I can't read music.......
  15.  Draw and paint. Like I used to. Life just seemed to get in the way.
  16. Find myself and reconnect with the earth - I feel to have lost that connection over the last year, I know why and know I need to fix it
  17. Become greener.

A short list (snort...) but aim high and then nose dive -  a good policy that has kept me going all through life hehehe!

And you? What have you got planned?

Happy New Year to you all,
including those anonymous bloggers who dip into my day and leave silently
- I thank you for participating in a slice of my life

It is a new year -  let it begin!
