I'm so glad you popped in, I'll put the kettle on and you grab yourself a chair - a good a time as any to stop for a brew. Enjoy...

31.12.09

New Year's Eve.

A quietly shared family evening.
Not your usual frivolities or noisy antics.

We were marking another, more personal, anniversary.
Tomorrow will be a year since my Gran died.

We shared food and drink.
We ate and we talked.

We watched a film,
whilst my Mom, fav-sis-in-law and I knitted and knattered.
The boys were draped on the floor with the cats
as they all stretched out in front of the fire.

It wasn't an outwardly emotionally sad evening,
more of an evening of togetherness.

****************************

The final tally?
The final count of the mincepie munching....?
Well, there is still time is to eat a few more.
so won't reveal just yet.

The mincepie chart made by my youngest,
with a few
(now fewer)
survivors from himself's last baking session.

28.12.09

My last day before returning to work.
The three men in my life have another week off.

One of our favourite places is the Yorkshire Dales and as the weather was nice again,
we opted for a walk.

Himself sorted out the cars, putting the Landrover in the garage

...erm... I queried - are we going in the car?

'Yes' himself brightly replied - I've washed the landie, want to keep it clean.

ok........

We set off, getting nearer the Dales, nearer thick snow.
Little thoughts in my head kept mentioning - landie, landie, landie.

'It'll be fine' himself replied
unlike me, he is a confident driver on ice and snow.

By now we were driving on a narrow barely two-width car lane
that had been made even narrower to a one lane track by frozen hard snow.

'Nearly there' himself said (was that for my benefit or his?)

Icy tracts mixed with sludgy muck were strewn across the lane now no wider than a sheep track.

I concentrated hard on my crochet - so not to appear worried.

We eventually got to the top of the hill,
the views were good (I have to concede to that)
but my eyes were either glued to my yarn (YO hook, through stitch, BLO, YO hook ...)
or straight forward at the lane now looking remarkably like an icy chasm at which we were at the bottom
(no - don't look - count your stitches!!)

'Ah\ himself breathed, 'we will just park - over there'

Where? I asked,

'There, by those big vans, plenty of room'

The vans in question were parked directly on a farm track as they could not get off,
but did that worry himself? - oh no......

He threw the car around the first van, using it as a form of catapult and launched us onto the farm track at some speed. **
Crunch, clatter, scrunch, crunch

'See' himself said cheerfully 'no problem'

In the back the boys managed to make themselves heard over the awful crunching sounds to ask.
'Daddy what is that noise??'

'Oh, it's only the ice on the road under the engine' himself replied knowledgeably.

'Ah, we'll park here' he said as he threw the car onto the snowy edge of the farm track.

Bearing in mind that :
A - the rather large vans had not managed it,  and
B - we were being watched by the equally large van drivers,
C - the small estate car was manically lurching across the icy tracts of untamed frozen snow with me now gripping on to my crochet hook so tightly it gave me white knuckles and the boys were in the back shrieking and chortling with the whole naughtieness of it all!

Thud - we stopped.

Out leaps himself 'I'll just put the snow chains on'

The boys and giddy dog got out to play,

I got my camera out, still very conscious that we are being watched open-mouthed by the large group of large van drivers, now finding our escapades more interesting than theirs.

Several times himself lashed the snow chains onto the car, whilst boys and I helpfully kicked icy clods of frozen snow aside.
(I say that carefully as I don't think himself thought we were that helpful)

We got cold,
Himself got covered in oily road muck from the wheels,
Bless him - all through this he did remain remarkably cheerful.
Although I do suspect I heard a grinding of teeth when the snow chains fell off yet again.....

Finally, he managed to get the car off the frozen wedge that it had been teetering on and drove back up the lane, only to turn around and reverse back down............
He was a man determined,
like no man I know
he was going to park there
and he was going for his walk!

Crunch, clatter, scrunch, crunch

'I'll park here' he said as he leaped triumphantly out of the car, ready for his walk.

As we booted up, the large van drivers got out shovels and started to dig their vans out.......... avoiding eye contact with this strange little family and their now parked car.

We went for our walk.

**No vans or cars (or pride) was hurt in the making of this walk.
Thankyou

PS: a bit later, himself was heard to say 'hmmm maybe I should have brought the landrover'
but shhhhhh I won't tell if you don't x

27.12.09

In complete contrast to yesterday's blue skies and wonderful walk,
today has been a mix of leaden skies and rain.

Today's to do list

  • Tidy lounge and rumpus room (well at least try and find the floor) - wip
  • Put away the toys and presents still lingering downstairs - not a chance
  • Sort out the recycling (separate paper from plastic, wrapping from string) - done - thanks to himself
  • Sort out buttons into suitable container - done
  • Eat mincepices - wip **
  • Carry on with the model aircraft constructing - wip (although himself seems to have taken over from eldest, who has given up in disgust at the transfers collapsing before being stuck on the aircraft)
**Youngest is only 7 mincepies behind himself - final numbers will be revealed on the last day of 2009.

*********************************

No pictures taken today, so just a couple of favourite images of mine from last week -
the day when the snowplough followed us over the moor tops

And himself pulling the boys with 'our' hill in view

26.12.09

After the excesses of the last couple of days,
we decided to throw off the festive slothfulness and go for a walk.

The snow ,has begun to thaw
so, in places,
we had to wade through slushy puddles and ford swollen streams.

The sky was a brilliant blue
as we went over the tops to Wycoller , our neighbouring village.

The boys had taken their sledges so himself pulled them along the lanes. The boys were delighted and the games they had as they went along were noisy and happy.

On the far side of the village, we stopped and took pictures at the Panopticon.

There was hardly anyone around.
We watched as the sun began to disappear behind the  horizon, before we started our way home.

We came back by moonlight as the thaw began to re-freeze hard again.

***********************

The boys have defrosted,
we have eaten,

Himself has been baking.

Another lovely day.

24.12.09

We are replete,
satisfied,
delighted,
tired.

Last night we went out - there was a new show in town.
My Mom starred - with an excellent supporting role played by my sister in law.
My Dad and his side-kick (Jak - the cat) gave a stirling performance as production hands, as did my brother and his chocolate coloured shadow (Roxy the labrador).

The name of the show?

Christmas Eve Dinner - 2009.

The stage was set - the table was laid.
The decor delighted the audience.
The atmosphere was electric - the boys were excited.
The music just added to the wonderful ambiance.
The mist came in making the lights outside more magical and mystical than before.

There was the last minute nerves
the last minute stirrings and slicing and trimming.......when..........
ta da!
Time to take our seats.

Table presents were quickly opened and oohs and aahs abounded.

The first course - a starter of a citrus medley with maraschino cherries - a favourite of my late Gran, was soon eaten.
Hurrah went the audience

This was quickly followed by a traditional Christmas performance with veggie-wimp delights (for me)

Crackers cracked
Jokes regaled
Food eaten
Stories told
Candles flickered
Boys giggled
Party hats worn and lost
Party favours swapped
Plates piled high
Second helpings abound

Encore!

Then....... the anticipation was palpable
the tension crackled in the air
it was time for
the Christmas pudding
(or as himself refers to it - the torching of the pudding)

The lights were dimmed
the brandy warmed
then lit
and............
voila - this brought the house down (not literally fortunately!)

The evening wound down gently
after the family marathon of washing and drying of the dishes

Wonderful.
The show was a success!

***************************

This morning we awoke to the whispering of two very excited boys.
Somehow - sometime during the night -
very - very - very late during the night
(due to the wakefulness of said boys)
two stockings had arrived in their bedroom
and they had come to ours to open them.

Santa had got it right! (phew say his helpers)

Downstairs, under the tree were more delights.

Later, my family arrived bearing Santa-like sacks filled with goodies.

Lunch was an 'iffits' affair - if it's left over - it gets eaten.
These must have been the tastiest left overs in a very long time.

*****************************

Today has meandered pleasantly and we are now sitting in front of the TV
some toys have been played with,
books have been partly read,
a few chocolates have been consumed
and.......

We are replete,
satisfied,
delighted,
tired.

24.12.09

The last of the presents made - finally.
The last of the presents wrapped - well - almost.
The last of the snowflakes  cut out and hung up - the snow storm is now complete.
The deadline has done it's usual - arrived
whilst I wasn't looking.

But to all,
family,
friends,
far and wide,
 in
Africa
Australia
Switzerland
France
America
and
here in the uk......

I wish you peace,
happiness,
love and a family filled time.

23.12.09

Spent the morning delivering presents -
Roads were white
Snow gritters scarce
Views were magical
Boys were excited

So - I thought I would share with you, the beauty of the moorlands that our village nestles below.

An abandoned farmstead, now used for sheep

My boys and me,
with out them
I am
nothing.

Spin-drift flying over the road, high up on the moors.

20.12.09

The festive holidays have been improved greatly by a healthy dose of snow.

So himself and the boys have been out helping themselves to it.
They return,
red nosed,
rosy cheeked,
frozen fingers,
frozen toes.

The peace of the house is broken by their exuberance and delight at the skidding,
the sliding,
the crashing,
the snowballs.

And me?
No, it's not for me,
I get too cold.
I have to grit my jaw hard to stop my teeth chattering.

So I stay home and craft - ahh, now that I can do.

I've not wasted the time, I have managed to make some more pressies, some I can share with you now, some I can't...... not yet any way.

Our hill.

A felt bow hair band, trimmed with self coloured thread -  a gift for a friend's daughter

A mobile of flowers for a new bedroom

Felt flowers, twirling outside in a snowy garden

A hungry visitor - affectionately called Jack Tar.

'Nuff waffling, back to crafting!

18.12.09

Forth time lucky?
I had hoped on my third try that I would be able to complete my post
but no - it was not to be.
**************************************

I am being thwarted in my quest to craft.

A deadly combination of:
Boys (home from school for the festive break)
Weather (real snow this time - calling for photos to be taken)
Visitors (friends popping in for a brew and a chat)
Life (ribbons to be sorted, tidying up, felt squares to be put away, carpet to be vacuumed, chickens, dog, cats to be fed, fire to stoke)

and

the worst of them all.....
Time (rapidly running out as I have to go to work soon)

I had so many things I wanted to share, but that will have to wait.

Time waits for no man nor for me.

15.12.09

It's the second day that life has tried to get in the way of crafting.

I've been busy - in between being nursemaid to a sick son.

Can't show any more - shhhhh

Another sneak preview

still have a lot to do, so better get on......

Monday, 14 December 2009

14.12.09

I don't let going to work get in the way of playing!

I've busy again, making another garland - this time for a friend.

We've have also been suffering extreme adverse weather conditions,
 - yes I know it is winter
but it all started as a light flurry

It wasn't long before a second pair of scissors
arrived and the flurry turned into a blizzard

Then eventually a complete white-out - it was becoming desperate when the
third pair of scissors joined in and completely snowed us under...

The results of the freak weather conditions will soon be revealed..........

13.12.09

Yesterday, after the frenzied festive wreath making day
I came home to collapse and admire my handiwork.

Except youngest had other ideas.
Youngest wanted to put up the rest of the festive decorations.
And he wanted to do it.............NOW.

So..........
Himself went upstairs.
Himself brought down the boxes.
Eldest told youngest what to do.

Except youngest had other ideas.
He wanted to do the same as eldest.

So......
We got out the tree,
we unpacked the decorations,
we unraveled the lights.

Except the lights had other ideas.
The lights wouldn't work.

So.........
Himself checked each bulb.
Himself tightened each connector.
Himself finally managed to get them to work.

Youngest was hopping up and down.
He was desperate to put the lights up.
He was keen to get the decorations on the tree.

Except Eldest had no idea which ones to use.
Eldest was still deciding what the colour theme was to be.
Eldest DID NOT WANT youngest to help.

So.....................

I waded in.
I mediated.
I delegated.
I took over.

Except the boys objected.
The boys objected LOUDLY
as they wanted to do it.

So...........
I took a back seat.
I reached for my mug of tea
and I watched as the decorations started to go on the tree.

Except youngest had other ideas.
He had had enough and went off to play.

Sigh.

Eldest and I,
then finally just me,
finished off the decorations and 5 hours later,
I collapsed and admired my handiwork.

Traditional wooden ornaments, bought years ago at a market in Devon.

Rocking horse - a gift one Christmas many many years ago

A bowl filled with pebbles -
from Penmon in Anglesey,
from beaches in Devon,
from walks in the Yorkshire Dales,
covered with sayings and quotes.

Stocking fillers from last year to the boys from Granny and Bumpa.

A sneaky peak of part of my wreath - A complete change of style for me this year.

Part of the garland above the wood burning stove.

Our house is now gently scented by cinnamon and dried oranges.

Delicious.

12.12.09

At last - our festive wreath get-together.

It was wonderful - seeing old friends,
meeting up and talking.
Playing corny festive music.
Even dancing to it.

The musty old village hall was filled with the scent of pine and cinnamon.
It was filled with laughter and music.

We munched on mincepies and drank copious amounts of tea and coffee.

A hint of gold glints on the ivy blossom, catching the gold work on the ribbon.

Teasel heads shimmering, nestling on a bed of greenery.

The beautiful glaucous blue of the Eucalyptus in sharp contrast with the berries.

A glittery gold butterfly - dancing on foliage, a symbol of my favourite sister in law.

A ribbon of rich reds and greens, wearing snowflakes of gold adorn mistletoe, holly and hypericum berries.

The unusually silent and empty workshop - we were all at lunch.

Wicker balls, tartan ribbon, mistletoe, ivy and holly.
So traditional, so modern.

Tiny gold stars resting on a deep purple ribbon.

Roses made from Acer leaves by my Mom

An angel - an arrangement by my friend Angela's daughter -  catching the last of the afternoon sun.

A splash of fuchsia pinks and rich golds.

Beautifully arranged by a special friend.

It has been a wonderful day,
it went very quickly.
And, as the evening wore on, wreaths appeared on doors around the village.
It has been a good day.
