17... Sweet 17♥ counting on memories

There are some days, some walks, some views, something that etches a memory deep deep in to me and every now and then it re-surfaces and I find that I smile just at the thought of it. I can easily fall back into that walk, that view or that day.

This walk, gentle and definitely designed with me and my sore knee in mind, is one of those wonderful ones.

We'd walked along a canal, admiring the narrow boats - we have a little game we play. The boys and I 'choose' a narrow boat - extolling it's virtues, admiring the paintwork or marvelling at the bric-a-brac on the tops. Then as we walk along we either 'swap' or 'keep' our boat with the next one we see. On this particular walk we were spoilt for choice with a glorious hotch potch of narrow boats all recently painted ready for winter, chimneys chuffing out woody scented smoke and wheelbarrows filled to the brim with firewood. The autumnal colours were at their richest and the reflections in the still water were clear and precise.

We had followed the canal, diverted into the town (Ju24 will know which one I mean) then back out again to meet the canal. On the way we found a humpbacked bridge........with this sign - perfect for today :)

Once we'd rejoined the canal, a young swan slid alongside us and very politely asked for a nibble - which we quite happily provided. We lingered, admiring the bird and marvelling at the beauty of her plumage.

Our walk then returned back along the water's edge back to the car. Bliss.

Today's post was a little later than usual - I spent a lovely afternoon chatting with a good friend. Tomorrow will be another good one - I am on a yarn shop forage with fav-sis-in-law and my mom - what wonderful way to start a Friday :)

Reflecting and Murmuring

Saturday turned out to be one of the nicest days we have had in a long long time.

Take one quietly moving canal glowing in a warm wintery sun

Add glorious reflections in the crystal clear water..... top with 200 year old bridges....

Sprinkle with plenty of leaves drifting slowly, leave to be absorbed in the mind as you wander along the towpath.

Then, once digested and enjoyed follow with a natural phenomenon that even made the boys speachless (and that takes something special)..... starling murmurations

We, along with a few other folk, watched in awe as these birds moved in a collective Brownian motion style. Hundreds and hundreds of them arrived in huge swarms and joined the 'mother-flock' and swooped and whirled over head. Whilst they were airborne all you could hear was the swish of thousands of wings and the occasional chirp.....but when they landed on the reed beds their song sounded like a huge beautiful metallic waterfall swelling to an almost painful crescendo - I am getting goosebumps again just recalling it! If you EVER get a chance to see them - do so - it was/is wonderful !

So, how do you top that? Well you finish it with an evening picnic watching the sun sink behind the sea whilst listening to the waves lapping gently at the shore - that's how.

In the words of elbow - 'One day like this a year'd see me right'

Goosey Goosey Gander....................

Another nursery rhyme that I love as it rolls off my tongue is Goosey Goosey Gander. It is one that can be chanted and skipped to or one that can be said with malice and intent.

Childhood nursery rhyme books had pretty little drawings of geese, languishing women and comical men tripping down stairs. It is only as an adult I discovered some of the historical meanings behind the accident-prone old man and the  goose wandering around a woman's bedroom!

Goosey Goosey Gander whither shall I wander,

Upstairs, downstairs and in my lady's chamber
There I met an old man who wouldn't say his prayers,
I took him by the left leg and threw him down the stairs.

Again a rhyme filled with history and representation, the earliest form is thought to date back to the 16th century.

The lady's chamber mentioned refers to a room known as a 'Solar' which was an area in a castle that was used by the lord or lady as a bedroom. Originally it had been part of the hall  which was partitioned off from the hoi polloi to allow some privacy.

During the 16th century, Catholic priests would have to hide to avoid persecution, performing ceremonies is secrecy within private households. Within these houses were built 'Priest Holes' which were bolt holes in which, during a zealous search, the priest could hide.

It is thought that the reference to 'an old man who wouldn't say his prayers' is a Catholic priest praying (in forbidden Latin and not in English) with the lady of the household in the Solar. The line with the old man being thrown down the stairs by his 'left-leg' is also an indicator that he was a Catholic priest, as a 'left-footer' is used as a religious slur.

Cromwell's soldiers marched in 'goose step' which alludes to the first line of the rhyme. His Roundheads (soldiers) were used to search the houses for Catholic Priests and the line mentioning the man being thrown down stairs is a light reference to the fact both the priest and the family would more than likely be executed for their beliefs.

Interesting, isn't it? That persecution, execution, subversion and suppression can be chanted happily by children without even knowing the origins!

Also interesting is that recently friends decided to re-decorate their kitchen. This entailed pulling out the old units which exposed the original stone wall and plaster. Having done so, they discovered a part of their wall beneath their stone steps had some sort of secret covering. They knocked it down and discovered a 'man-sized' hole, just enough space to hide.......

Final bit of waffle - that photograph - I suffered..for..my..art..with..
those..birds.They insisted that I was worthy of a breakfast. Ouch.

** My information has been garnered over the years, from books, the tinter, from amateur research and general curiosity - there is a lot more out there and this is only what I have learnt and discovered, if you know of a different version or slant, I would love to hear it. I am not out to offend any one!!

Summer (?) solstice...... oh and ouch!

Happy summer solstice! Yes, I know, I have also looked out my rain streaked window and wondered about using the word summer, but as I have only one fleece on instead of the customary two or three it must be summer......but just to be on the safe side, I have lit the fire.

Last weekend saw some sense knocked into (or possibly out of) me. Himself had been muttering dark sinister things about the rose at the end of the garden.

He was correct that it had taken over trifid-like and had smothered his favourite bench. He likes to sit there in the evening sunlight (when on the rare occasion we actually get some) on a weekend . But this particular rose had thwarted his plan and HE WAS GOING TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!

Himself 1 : Rose 0

Next thing I know, he has rigged up a frame to force the rose up higher and away from it's original support so that there was now a space to allow pruning.

Look he says, I made it easier for you (me?) to sort that rose out - coz if I do it  - I'll just hack at it and kill the **** thing..............

So, armed with my secateurs I started to cut away. I have to admit to not feeling 100% safe beneath the frame so moved around to the back of the rose (which I have to say is an over 20 foot high rambling variety). Much pruning and trimming and pulling of dead stuff away later, I returned to to the front of the plant to see how things were shaping up. I stood and admired how much better the rose was looking then noticed a dead branch that I'd cut but not pulled out, leaned in and yanked....hard......

The frame collapsed.

Fortunately my head and shoulder broke it's fall and it landed gently on the lawn. I on the other hand needed much mopping up and copious mugs of sweet tea. Ouch.

Rose 1 : Me 0

Sunday - feeling a little bruised but not defeated I was pottering out and about in the garden (avoiding the sniggering rose) and look what was watching................

Through out the day this little chappie popped around with it's mum until she was fed up with it. It then shivered and cheeped rather sadly and even tried following us. We felt that the fledgling had actually left the nest through greed rather than being ready. So, Himself (armed with his longest ladder and sweaty palms), returned the fledgling to it's nest. One happy fledgling later - it's mum started feeding again :)

And on another sweet note - doesn't this look super yummy!

Well, that was our weekend, it had it's highs and it had it's lows :) Here's to the next one! (where's my crash helmet??)

Lovely to chat to you my dears, I've missed you, hope your week will be filled with as much colour and love as you deserve xxxxxxxxxx

07.09.10 - Oooh - getting excited- looky looky!

I just love it when I start a new project - a choice of new colours, the excitement of a new WIP and the sheer enjoyment of the 'act of crafting'.

Just look at these colours of woolly delicious-ness!
(ok ok for the purists it's acrylic)
Yummy
I am making a throw of candy stripes in the most scrumptious colours with inviting names such as Sherbet and Lipstick, Aster and Spring Green, Pomegranate and Fondant - how could I resist?!?
******************************

And don't forget my give-away!

To celebrate one year of waffle and guff, I have made (but not quite finished!) a handful of birdies in bright felty fun.

They will have loops so you can hang them up
on cupboard door handles
on a festive tree or wreath
(yes that that time of season coming up)
or on parcels
Any where really!

So, just say hi, leave your name, no anonymous comments please between now and midnight (UK time) on 9th September 2010 and I will pick a winner at random.

I am happy to post internationally.

I have had some lovely comments already and don't actually feel that I deserve them. I am always surprised that people find my meandering tales and waffle on woolly things worth reading!

Now, excuse me, I have a basket full of yarn calling me for a bit of hooky hooky! (oh err - now that sounds like fun!!)

27.10.09

Well - yes.

The screech of the gull as it wheels overhead.
The whisk of their wings as they turn and twist on the air.
Then they swoop for the bread as she throws it up.
A loud and ravenous mass of beaks and birds as they snatch and tear at the loaf.
Then as quickly as they came, they go.
Landing just out of reach on the tarn and wait for the next meal to arrive.
