Easter Break review in photos

....on high wild hills, over farm land, through isolated villages.

We celebrated Easter.....

.....with cheese rolling down a wet and windy hill...

                                   ....eating chocolate for breakfast!

I took inspiration from......

.....lichens on stone walls, carvings from ruined buildings, fungus on rotten trunks, flowers, stones and sky.

We had a lovely time, may be a little wet and a little cold at times, but these small discomforts were far outweighed by the beauty of the wilderness we camped in.

sky scarf progress

.......has been slow. But at last I have been able to snatch a few moments before work or last thing at night before going to bed to do a row or two. Like I say - progress is slow.

As a new knitter I am struck how slo-o-o-o-w knitting is compared to crochet - that could be down to the fact I am still unsure.

I have also decided that knitting is far more of a combat sport than a relaxing hobby. Normally I can grab a hook and a ball of yarn-to-go and while sitting in the car dash off a few rows. I have even gone walking with hook-n-wool and made granny squares or when my ripple blanket was still but a scarf sized stripling I took it out walking with me all over the hills and it grew glorious zig-zag ripple row by row as the miles disappeared under my feet.

Could I have taken knitting with me? I suspect not..... Each needle demands an enormous amount of personal space as I wave them around. They stab my thumb when I am not looking and quick as a flash make a sudden escape by sliding out of the stitches and vanishing beneath cushions.

I can be seen hunching over my scarf, tongue sticking out in deep concentration - the occasional (ok ok frequent) cuss as I drop a stitch or find that despite counting the pattern is looking like a positive skew, which I am lead to believe is a mathematical term for a measurement of the asymmetry of the probability distribution of a real valued random variable - yup - that sounds like my knitting.

Am I enjoying it? Strangely yes in a 'challenging' sort of way.

Now to sort out the basket.....

 I have been playing nicely - looky looky! My first baby steps in returning to knitting (last did serious - if you could call it that - knitting when I was still at school)


My sky scarf - each month will be a different stitch and as I go along I intend to get braver and attempt more complicated patterns.

I am having such fun firstly doing the recording of the sky colours - I am keeping an eye over the whole day which is why there are so many colour variations and then translating my colouring into knitting is actually good fun. 


I suspect you 'proper' knitters out there have noticed the fringe on the left of the scarf. This is my second attempt, the first only being a one row per day meant the final scarf would only be about 75cm long so I ditched it. However, with my first attempt I wove in all the ends, when I started this one I decided that I actually liked the fringing along the edge and am deliberately leaving a length of yarn. Once I finished the whole project I will trim them neatly..

How brilliant is that?! Oh - notice the little stool I'm standing on? Well she did that too! The socks however are the model's own (hahahaha) and yes I do deliberately choose to wear odd ones - it makes me happy :)

Hi Jacqueline - I will be taking some photos soon,  slight change in scarf plans - nothing major but have restarted it and much much happier with what's coming off the needles.

Fiona - My scarf has quite a few shades happening - quite pleased with it! 

Lovely Lady - yes katunda is one of my favourite (and frequently used) words seeing I have a fair bit of katunda around.

Hearts♥ at home and my sky scarf begins!!

Saturday brought more grey skies and biting cold air. I kept busy and warm in the house. Usually I sit at my desk surrounded by my 'katunda'(stuff) in the rumpus room, but at the moment I am around the corner in the sitting room, nearer the fire and on a lower more comfortable seat.

Away from my usual sanctuary made me notice it more. (please excuse the mess - I had just been turning the place upside down looking for my skyscarf note book - more on that later)

Jumbled together in a chaotic collection I have pens and pencils, hooks and knitting needles (more of them later!) I have samples of work, test pattens and swatches. I have drawings from the boys as well as cards from friends. I use them as inspiration. There are postcards from friends, from wool shops and from wonderful bloggers who have sent squares and blankets for Kyōyū kyōyū - share. I have photos of the boys and of holidays.

And as ever, hearts♥ linger between the pictures or soar like thoughts above my head.

Now, my sky scarf. I was inspired to learn to knit (or rather re-learn) when I read about a sky scarf. So, inspired but unable to start, I collected the yarns and wools - all recycled, reclaimed, gifted or rescued in the shades of the sky and began to keep a daily colour chart and brief description of the weather.

This evening (with the 'help' of Lily) I laid out my stash. Then I went to find my little note book.....and I looked and looked (with the help of the boys) and I looked. But could I find it?? I began to despair, when I had a moment of inspiration. I last saw my notebook when Holly had been mountaineering across my yarns - I had shrieked a suitable response and my notebook must have kicked aside by a furry foot as she escaped from the slippery slopes of wool.

So, with a mixture of trepidation and excitement I have started my scarf - at the moment it is only 4 rows but it is a start. Once it is larger I will share my wobbly stitches and first baby steps in knitting.

The originator of the idea is Lea from Leafcutter Designs  and I am not the only one doing the sky scarf - Tizduster has already all of January knitted as has Super Gran  who has also knitted a month's worth of weather and Lupin over at Bugs and Fishes is doing a sky blanket .
