We have spent two glorious days out in the garden. I have blizted the greenhouse, swept it out, cleaned pots, sifted compost, sorted out-of-date seeds, shifted spider webs, burnt rubbish and with the help of the boys, we have started sowing seeds. I've even set out the potatoes so they can start chitting.
At last, at last, at last we can start leaving winter behind
and get on with spring.
Having said that, it was so frosty overnight that the hen's water
was frozen solid.
We've also had to hen-proof their pen. We have a new bird who has been named Florence aka Houdini-hen. She prefers to spend most of her day out in the garden fettling around in the plants and scratting the flower beds rather than settling in with the rest of the girls.
From late summer through to early spring, the girls are regularly allowed out so that they can 'garden' and find sunny spots to dust bath. But now, as shoots start to appear they are banished back to their pen much to their disgust. Hence all the escapology and houdini-like antics.

Now, a few days ago, Youngest put in a request for a '........' and I showed some photo-clues. Well. it's time to reveal what he asked me to make...........
No - not a rabbit
No - not a monkey
No - not a donkey
No - not a teddy
and
Yes - I did lay the pieces to suggest something other than what the final toy would be....
Would you have guessed ..........
A Viking?
Meet Wilfred.
Now Eldest has his eye on something similar, so I am now making - Bill the Caveman......

Himself found on the lid of the glass recycle box - a frozen puddle.
Filled with leaves.
Beautiful.

52 recipes etc -
Well, not had a catch up of any new recipes lately and thought I'd do it today and see that Colouritgreen had exactly the same idea :)
Recipes 1 - 14 are listed at my post dated 22.02.10 , so here goes with....
15. Fasula - a variation of Fasulada - a Greek butterbean dish with lashings of garlic, parsley, origanum and tomatoes - absolutely DELICIOUS!
16. All-in-one-Victorian-sponge - which is basically the normal recipe dumbed down to 'chuck it all in one bowl, beat the hell out of it for 2 - 3 minutes, then cook, cool and eat' so...so..so easy that I am going to show the men in my life how to do it and let them get on with it! (found this too sweet for my liking but scoffed by same men in my life)
17. Guernsey Apple and Ginger cake - hmmm, a much healthier option than cake number 16 but still not for me - I am coming to the sad sad conclusion that I don't actually like cake)
Ah well, a good weekend, we have been busy, got lots done and best of all - the sun was shining.
Hope your weekend was a pleasant as ours :)

Those frozen leaves are absolutely beautiful. Wilfred's pretty splendid too!
ReplyDeleteSo much to enjoy -- The time outside is wonderful, isn't it? Today we're cleaning out the fish pond. I'm always amazed at how resilient those goldfish are. Your chickens are funny. I've never been around chickens before, but they sound like they're rather demanding.
ReplyDeleteNow the viking is a joy!!! How very clever. He's defnitely a Wilfred. That name fits him well!
I can always tell if I've had a good day in the yard, if I have dirt under my fingernails. Here's to hoping you have lots of soap to scrub your nails.
Good thing Wilfred is there to keep his eye on the chickens while everyone else is working!
Thank you Thursday - the photograph doesn't do the frozen mosaic of leaves justice and the Viking has been taken to bed and being cuddled to sleep :)
ReplyDeleteYes Jan - despite a pair of fingerless mitts and gloves my hands got very cold and grubby - surely a good sign of late winter gardening!
i was going to say viking next... really.... well maybe....
ReplyDeletehe's great :)
Wonderful Wilfrid, your son is lucky.
ReplyDeleteThanks Colouritgreen and Angela :)
